Established in 1883, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) oversees a renowned urban park system spanning 6,809 acres of parkland and water. Featured among its 180 park properties are 55 miles of parkways, 102 miles of Grand Rounds biking and walking paths, 22lakes, 12 formal gardens, 7 golf courses and 49 recreation centers. SUMMARY:
The MPRB is seeking an experienced Recreation Service Area Manager to direct and manage a Recreation Service Area for the MPRB by performing high level leadership, management, and administrative work for the delivery of recreation programs and services through collaborative community partnership ensuring high standards in program and service delivery are set while meeting the needs and interests of diverse communities.
Work schedule shall include at least two evenings per week and at least two weekends per month.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Responsible to plan, coordinate and direct diversified year-round, citywide recreation center programs within a service area to ensure that the mission, goals, policies and priorities of the MPRB are incorporated into the recreation center services and needs of the community are being met.
- Under the general direction of the Department Director, strategically lead and manage operations for recreation centers and playgrounds that promote highly respected facilities, services and program offerings, including planning and executing all administrative work, providing daily oversight, identifying and implementing safety practices, and addressing upkeep and maintenance issues.
- Ensure that standards and regulations within service area are met or exceeded.
- Develop recommended unit budget and manage the unit's approved budget, which include performance goals; perform cost control activities; monitor revenue and expenditures to assure sound fiscal control and assure effective and efficient use of budgeted funds. Recommend fee schedules; review and analyze financial statements to ensure maximum efficiency of operation, adapt plans as necessary to meet long term goals; manage and maintain operational statistics; and recommend capital improvement projects.
- Using data, actively manage and monitor performance metrics recommending adjustments based on performance results and holding staff accountable based on performance data. Gather interpret and prepare data for studies, reports and recommendations.
- Effectively manage professional contracts and community/business partnerships and comply with grant and donation requirements to ensure they support the Park Board's goals and strategic directions.
- Hire, train, supervise, evaluate, develop and discipline subordinate employees for development of a professional and support staff with a high degree of competence and sound judgment.
- Create a work environment that encourages staff to perform to the best of their abilities and holds every employee accountable for results.
- Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
WHAT TO BRING:
Need to Have:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks and Recreation, Public Administration, Business or related field.
- Increasingly responsible experience in facility management: at least five (5) years
- Increasingly responsible experience in leadership, management and administration: at least five (5) years
- Experience supervising employees: at least five (5) years
- Valid driver's license.
Nice to Have:
- Experience supervising employees at multiple locations: at least three (3) years
- Experience supervising unionized employees: at least three (3) years
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:
- Knowledge of planning, organizing, coordinating and implementing comprehensive community park and recreation programs including but not limited to youth development; children, teen, adult and family programming; events; and therapeutic recreation.
- Knowledge of school-age child care state standards, and program development and practices.
- Knowledge of contemporary principles and best practices of personnel management and supervision.
- Ability to solve problems and effectively handle critical, controversial and/or sensitive policy issues; maintain confidentiality in work-related matters.
- Ability to demonstrate respect and sensitivity for cultural differences.
- Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
