The Maine Office of the Speaker of the House seeks a hardworking and team-oriented individual for the role of Legislative Aide. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator and writer, be adept at balancing and organizing multiple priorities, and will enjoy working as part of a team to meet diverse challenges.
Job Summary: Under supervision of the Chief of Staff, performs research and analysis on past and present legislation to provide the Speaker of the House, Committee Chairs and members with an accurate understanding of bill content and impact. Requires the ability to carefully assess assignments and choose the correct course of action, often under significant time constraints. Works closely with the Chief of Staff to define objectives and set priorities, with work reviewed after completion for technical accuracy and accomplishment.
Examples of Duties
- Researches past and present legislation, both in Maine and nationwide, and prepares bill summaries for Committee Chairs and member review.
- Attends public hearings and work sessions and reports back to the Speaker, Committee Chairs and members.
- Assists with the development of bills in line with the Speaker’s policy priorities and drafts public testimony.
- Regularly attends meetings with caucus members and legislative leaders.
- Drafts constituent communications regarding specific policy topics.
- Assists members with the preparation of legislation for upcoming sessions and with amendments for legislation in response to committee request.
- Assists legislative aides and other members of caucus/leader staff on specific policy questions.
- May assist with other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree or other equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Ability to communicate, coordinate and work effectively with the public, members of the legislature, legislative staff and executive branch.
· Excellent written and oral communication skills.
· Research and computer skills and experience.
· Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and under pressure.
· Demonstrated interest in politics and/or state government.
We offer a competitive salary and benefits package with Grade 8 salary, which starts at $58,094.40. The bi-weekly dollar values of some State-paid benefits include: $14.60 for dental insurance; 13.16% of employee’s pay towards retirement; and at least 85% ($422.95) of health insurance premiums (more information is available here). Participation in the Health Premium Credit Programcan decrease the employee’s cost of health insurance by 5%.
