TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Ecosystem Leader, assists in the collection, recording, and editing of fishery-dependent and fishery-independent data in the Corpus Christi Bay ecosystem and nearshore Gulf of Mexico. Operates equipment safely. Maintains gear, equipment, and facility. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.


Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Graduation from High School or GED.


Experience:

FWT I: No experience required;

FWT II: Four years relevant experience.


Licensure:

Must possess or be able to obtain, within 30 days of employment, a valid class "C" Texas driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required license


ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTIONS:

Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Fisheries Biology, Marine Biology, or closely related field may substitute for two years of relevant experience.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Two years of relevant experience;

Experience navigating vessels in shallow bay systems;

Experience working on vessels in the Gulf of Mexico or other large bodies of water;

Experience constructing, using, and maintaining specialized fisheries-sampling gears, such as seines, nets, trawls, and oyster dredges;

Experience with basic boat and outboard motor repair and maintenance.


Licensure:

Possession of current U.S.C.G. Captain’s License or similar boating safety license.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

FWT I:

Knowledge of common Texas marine organisms;

Knowledge of Texas commercial and recreational fisheries;

Knowledge of Texas coastal ecosystems;

Knowledge of fish and wildlife management and of environmental laws and regulations;


FWT II: Knowledge of FWT I; PLUS:

Knowledge of basic fishery management practices, conservation laws, and regulations;


FWT I:

Skill in the use of computers and MS Word, Excel, and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with co-workers and work-related contacts;

Skill in repair, maintenance, construction, and use of fisheries sampling gears, such as seines, gill nets, trawls, dredges, and longlines;

Skill in effective work habits, efficiently completing tasks, and following directions;

Skill in operating and maintaining, boats, outboard motors, and trailers;

Skill in basic vehicle maintenance;

Skill in collecting and recording data and maintaining accurate records;

Skill in operating and maintaining equipment and specialized tools;


FWT II: Skills of FWT I; PLUS:

Skill in managing several projects simultaneously;


FWT I:

Ability to function effectively as a member of a team;

Ability to interact effectively with the public;

Ability to learn to identify common marine organisms;

Ability to accurately follow instructions;

Ability to fully participate in field and water based sampling activities;

Ability to prioritize tasks and schedules;

Ability to observe and record biological data;

Ability to maintain field equipment and facilities;

Ability to learn methods employed in fish and wildlife management;

Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program;

Ability to perform routine (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work;

Ability to work under moderate supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment;


FWT II: Abilities of FWT I; PLUS:

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision;

Ability to learn basic purchasing procedures;

Ability to perform complex (journey-level) fish and wildlife conservation work;

Ability to work under general supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work hours other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with days off other than Saturday, Sunday, and holidays as needed;

Required to travel 5% with possible overnight stays;

Required to work overtime as necessary;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

Required to perform work in water-based field activities, including work aboard seagoing vessels in the inshore bays and nearshore Gulf of Mexico;

Required to perform work outdoors in extreme temperatures and occasionally adverse weather conditions;

Required to wade in water and deep mud, and walk over rough, uneven, and slippery surfaces or bay bottoms;

Required to perform manual labor, including lifting supplies and materials up to 50 lbs.;

Non-smoking environment in all state buildings and vehicles.
