Thermal Engineer Job at NVIDIA

NVIDIA Santa Clara, CA

NVIDIA has continuously reinvented itself over two decades. Our invention of the GPU in 1999 sparked the growth of the PC gaming market, redefined modern computer graphics, and revolutionized parallel computing. More recently, GPU deep learning ignited modern AI - the next era of computing. NVIDIA is a “learning machine” that constantly evolves by adapting to new opportunities that are hard to solve, that only we can take on, and that matter to the world. This is our life’s work, to amplify human creativity and intelligence. Make the choice to join us today! We are now looking for a highly motivated Thermal Engineer to join this dynamic and innovative Product Design team to support the next generation of thermal innovation. This person will contribute towards collaborative design needs while focusing primarily on High Performance Compute, Server, and related activities.
As part of this exciting multi-functional team, your task would be to create thermal designs and develop technologies across NVIDIA High-Performance Compute, Automotive, Add-in cards for graphics and HPC, and more with a general focus on improving and enabling thermal aspects of product designs and infrastructure. We challenge the status quo and the leading edge of computing. As a team, we support all products NVIDIA develops. Your contribution will be towards product concepts, and supporting translation of those concepts into designs, specifications, and manufacturing from package to systems. Be an integral member of a collaborative team which defines and develops thermal solutions working with multi-functional Product teams and overseas partners.
What you'll be doing:
On this team, the goals and objectives are carried out through a high degree of collaboration and use of state-of-the-art methods and technologies, analytical and computational analysis, and laboratory validation of prototypes.
These methods and processes are developed within NVIDIA’s thermal team. Part of your responsibility is driving trade-offs and validation aligned with product goals and contributing to thermal solution designs from beginning to end (i.e., conceptualization to production). You will also:
  • Design new thermal solutions in anticipation of and to enable new products
  • Build physical prototype assemblies and characterize them in the laboratory
  • Summarize and correlate data, modify designs, and improve our systems
  • Create summaries, and generally detail your efforts to broaden the knowledge of the team and company
  • Work with our team in continuously seeking ways to improve from lessons learned for better infrastructures and processes
What we need to see:
  • BSME minimum or equivalent experience
  • 4+ years of proven experience in product design, as well as strong thermal and validation technical background with product development knowledge including related manufacturing processes.
  • Solid understanding of FEA/CFD theory, and analysis tools related to heat transfer including excellent knowledge of at least one thermal analysis SW (e.g., IcePak, FloTHERM, Fluent)
  • Hands-on experience/proficiency in thermal evaluation of computer hardware and advanced thermal management technologies
  • Ability to visualize, clarify, and drive product needs individually and through multi-functional teams from fundamental concepts through system considerations
  • Experience in volume manufacturing and working with overseas manufacturers including experience in leading outside resources, component suppliers, and manufacturing partners
  • Deep understanding of thermal technology and passionate about what you do
  • Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills, and specifically a proven ability to effectively guide and influence within a dynamic matrix environment
  • Experience related to servers
Ways to stand out from the crowd:
  • Experience with thermal strategy and design for electronics products
  • Process and infrastructure development experience
  • Well-rounded background in product conceptualization, design, and manufacturing with good knowledge/experience from package to product integration
  • A generally high level of experience in product development and design while retaining a willingness to out-of-the-box/unconventional ideas is highly valued
