Position Description

The Office of Mayor Jacob Frey is seeking highly qualified candidates for the position of Principal Policy Aide, Community Safety. This politically appointed position provides advice and recommendations on policy and strategy related to community safety to Mayor Frey.

The Community Safety Principal Policy Aide works with the Mayor, policy team, communications team, and operations team to advance the Mayor’s goals and strategies. This position also works as a liaison between the Mayor’s office and multiple stakeholders including residents, community groups, City staff, public safety officials, business leaders, and elected officials to communicate priorities and initiatives related to public safety. The role serves as a key link between the Mayor’s Office and the newly created unified Office of Community Safety to deliver a coordinated response by its component departments: Police, Fire, Neighborhood Safety, Emergency Management, and 911.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with the Mayor and policy team to advance the Mayor’s goals and strategies.
  • Provide advice and recommendations to the Mayor, senior staff, and policy team on policy and strategy.
  • Support initiatives to increase transparency, accountability, and reform of community safety departments.
  • Support the development of alternatives to policing initiatives.
  • Serve as the Mayor’s representative and liaison to the community, boards and commissions, and other government policy makers.
  • Move the Mayor’s initiatives through public participation and policy-making process.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with City Council Members, their staff and City departments.
  • Track and report back to the Mayor’s policy team the policy initiatives of City Council Committees, commissions and community Boards.
  • Keep the Mayor and the Mayor’s office apprised of issues and activities important to the Mayor and the City.
  • Provide the Mayor and other staff with regular written and oral policy briefings necessary for meetings and decision-making.
  • Work with the Mayor’s schedulers to respond promptly to meeting requests and make proactive recommendations for the Mayor’s schedule.
  • Represent the Mayor at meetings and on phone calls; provide prompt and appropriate follow up.
  • Work with the Communications Director and Operations Director to ensure the Mayor’s office has clear and consistent communications and is responsive to media and constituent requests.
  • Work with the Policy Director, Communications Director, and Operations Director on large scale annual events such as the Mayor’s annual State of the City and Budget Addresses.
  • Work with the Policy Director on public safety related budget proposals and requests.
  • Convene meetings to coordinate efforts and keep stakeholders informed and involved in the Mayor’s priorities.
  • Act as an advisor during critical incidents to help guide the Mayor in decision making.
  • Staff the Mayor at meetings and provide prompt and appropriate follow up.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE


  • 5 years of experience that includes related job duties and responsibilities
  • Attention to detail
  • Reliable and self-motivated
  • Proven organizational skills, including time management
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills with proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Professional and tactful interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and independently, handling multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Knowledge of and the ability to use modern office computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, and other software programs; advanced experience with Microsoft Outlook and Office Suite a plus
  • Strong capacity to build coalitions within city government and the community
  • Sophisticated understanding of community stakeholders and community issues related to public safety
  • Deep understanding of policy development
Experience in labor relations is a plus
