Job summary
The plant operator performs checks and operates all plant equipment and systems at Platte River's Rawhide Energy Station. This is a highly collaborative position that works with leadership and other plant personnel and we are looking for an individual who works well with others, has good communication skills and a commitment to working safely.

This position is required to work a rotating 12 hour shift schedule that includes holidays, nights and weekends; and is subject to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations.

This position is scheduled to work fully onsite 100% of the time and is not eligible for remote work.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Models the mission, vision, values, and culture of the organization
  • Completes detailed, periodic checks on the plant instrumentation and equipment associated with the boiler, steam turbine-generator, air quality control, water treatment, and combustion turbine-generator units
  • Collaborates with shift supervisor and other plant personnel regarding the management of plant equipment and systems
  • Maintains and creates daily electronic reports of equipment operational concerns and communicates those to peers in operations, maintenance, and management
  • Interfaces with the plant Distributed Control System (DCS) to operate air quality control and ash handling equipment in compliance with environmental regulations
  • Identifies and troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and creates work orders in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Studies the plant's Clearance and Tag Out/Lockout Policy, passes the associated exam, and safely performs the duties of hanging clearances within three months
  • Completes all plant operator steps associated with computer training and hands-on training within three years
Other duties
  • Operates bottom ash haul truck
  • Provides leadership, direction, and training to other operations personnel
  • Studies plant training material to complete plant operator steps
  • Perform minor maintenance, equipment cleaning and housekeeping maintaining safe and a serviceable condition of plant equipment
  • This position is subject to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) regulations
  • Works weekends, nights, and holidays, as shift schedule requires
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, skills and abilities
  • Ability to maintain an alert status while working on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule, including night, weekend, and holiday work for 24 hour/7 days per week coverage
  • Working knowledge of power plant or other industrial facility's fundamentals and how industrial plant equipment relates to each system
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral form with peers, supervisors, and managers to maintain professional working relationships with all personnel; ability to clearly direct personnel using the plant two-way radio system
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical one-lines, logic drawings, technical manuals, piping, and instrument drawings (P&IDs)
  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment and keep updated on current developments and modifications within assigned areas
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office programs
  • Proven time management skills
  • Maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other personnel
  • Ability to solve basic math problems like calculating flow within piping systems, compute percentages, and determine tank volumes
  • Knowledgeable of industry safety procedures and protocol including personal protective equipment, Tagout/Lockout, confined space and fall protection
Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or its equivalent resulting in demonstrated ability to perform major duties
Work experience
  • Two years of experience at a power plant or other industrial facility preferred
Licenses
  • Current valid driver’s license and ability to remain insurable under Platte River’s vehicle liability policy
Physical requirements
  • Strenuous to extreme physical effort that includes frequent use of heavy objects (e.g., 50+ pounds) and may also use heavy tools or require strenuous application in awkward positions.
Work environment
  • Occasional hazards that are predictable or well protected against.
  • Regular exposure to heat and noise along with working outside in the elements
Hourly pay range for position: $39.83 - $49.79 (placement DOQ)
(range if annualized: $82,846 - $103,563)
