Position Summary
Working under the direct supervision of the CMDL Supervisor, performs duties authorized by the supervisor and laboratory director under CLIA 88 CFR Section 493. Under the oversight / control of the laboratory director, supervisor, and licensed technical staff, this position supports molecular genetic laboratory testing, safety procedures and specimen processing using standardized and established methodology. Possesses skills to perform proper specimen preparation, preservation and processing. Demonstrates an awareness of factors that that influence test results.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Assists in various clinical laboratory settings, including, but not limited to, specimen pick-up, accessioning, labeling, and general clean-up.
- Maintains and demonstrates knowledge of techniques for preparing and processing biological specimens using universal precautions.
- Maintains knowledge in the proper use of equipment, including incubators, centrifuges, thermal cyclers, freezers, and biohazard hoods.
- Demonstrates skills required to support technologists in the performance of daily quality control activities. Records temperatures of refrigerators, water baths, ovens, freezers and incubators on a daily basis. Notifies supervisor of unusual readings.
- Accessions samples submitted for testing and ensures that all information is complete on the test requisition form (TRF).
- Washes and cleans laboratory equipment and supplies such as glassware, sinks and tables in accordance with hospital standards.
- Cooperate with other personnel to achieve department and interdepartmental objectives and maintain good employee relations.
- Prioritizes work and provides prompt and efficient service.
- Prepares solutions and reagents according to standard formulas and procedures. Labels and fills specimen containers.
- Maintain sufficient levels of laboratory supplies, reagents and solutions.
- Maintains orderliness, cleanliness and follows safety practices in work areas.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to set up quality control, quality assurance, and quality improvement procedures for review by licensed technologist.
- Orders, receives supplies and distributes them to the appropriate areas within the laboratory.
- Attends departmental meetings as required.
Qualifications
Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:
- Associate Degree in Biology or other related Science. Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements
- Minimum one year of experience in laboratory atmosphere
- Experience in clinical laboratory, preferred.
