Medical Assistant-Oncology Job at Cancer Care Specialists
Job Overview:
The primary goal of the medical assistant is to provide direct (active) and indirect (passive) patient care under the direction of the physicians, mid-level providers, and registered nurses. This person must maintain accuracy and timeliness in providing patient care. In addition, they foster a whole team approach to patient care while working with co-workers, healthcare providers, and other healthcare facilities.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Escort patients to exam rooms, measure vital signs, and document all information in the patient’s chart.
- Conducts patient intake interviews while in exam room and documents medication reconciliation, past immunizations, smoking status in accordance with MIPS and the organization's clinical documentation guidelines.
- Ensure all related reports, labs, notes, and information is filled out and available in patients’ medical records prior to their appointment.
- Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records, keeping patient information confidential.
- Prepares exam rooms for patient examinations; Assist physician and nurse practitioners in exam rooms.
- Disinfects, cleans treatment rooms following patient examinations; Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.
- Keep exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepare sterilization as required; Properly disposes of contaminated supplies
- Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt of orders and maintaining stock in the exam rooms. Maintain all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)
- Take telephone messages and provide feedback and answers to patient/physician/pharmacy calls
- Conducts blood draws and phlebotomies as directed by the patient’s physician.
- Administers shots/injections to patients
- Start IV’s
- Interviews patients to obtain their medical history.
- Records patient medical history, vital statistics, and test results in patient medical files.
- Performs routine screening tests, such as height and weight measurements and blood pressure checks.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Personal Characteristics:
- Knowledge of medical terminology and hospital pharmacy operations

Qualifications:
Education:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Associate degree preferred.
Certification/Licensure: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant, RMA (AMT), or Certified Medical Assistant, CMA (AAMA)
3. Ability to obtain Office laboratory assistant within 30 days of employment.
Experience: Two years of relevant office experience preferred
Skills:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the patient life cycle process.
2. Ability to organize and prioritize work and manage multiple priorities.
3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including, letters, memos and emails.
4. Excellent attention to detail.
5. Ability to research and analyze data.
6. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with providers, management, staff, and contacts outside the organization.
8. Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access) and internet resources.
9. Proficient use after training period in OncoEMR and Advanced MD.
10. Proficient in medical terminology

Physical Requirements:
Hearing: Adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
Speaking: Must be able to communicate clearly to patients in person and over the
telephone.
Vision: Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from
printed sources and computer screens.
Other: Requires occasional lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds
unassisted. Requires frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand movements,
standing, walking, squatting and sitting, with some lifting, pushing and pulling exerted
regularly throughout a regular work shift.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $37,440.00 - $49,920.00 per year
